Abstract

This study examines the factors that drive the people of Malang City to choose leaders based on religion. This study combines a literature study and in-depth interviews to explore the public perspective on the role of religion in leadership selection. The results of the study indicate that the majority of the people of Malang City tend to choose leaders who share the same religion. However, there is a growing trend, especially among the younger generation, to consider competence and integrity rather than just religious background. Meanwhile, some people, especially from older and more conservative groups, still hold to the belief that co-religious leaders are more trustworthy in implementing policies that follow their religious values. This study also shows that religion plays a significant role in the political preferences of the people of Malang City, where the majority of voters tend to choose candidates who have the same religious background. This decision is driven by the belief that co-religious leaders better understand spiritual needs and are more able to represent the interests of their community. However, this tendency also poses challenges related to inclusion, justice, and social cohesion. This is because the tendency to choose leaders based on religion is closely related to identity politics, where religion becomes the main factor in political mobilization. This identity politics has the potential to strengthen polarization and social fragmentation, as well as hinder social integration. In addition, the exclusive selection of leaders based on religion can ignore important factors such as competence and integrity
